I have now managed to test the XP version MS-Fix-It I listed above: http: //support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-gb And proved it corrupts the XP BITS registry as described! If the service ........ NO SUPRISE IT DIDN'T WORK, well sort of. The reason this message appears is that the malware deleted the registry keys for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Update (wuauserv).
I wasn't sure what to do, I couldn't figure it out. Had more or less given up after no success with MS Fixit. Sometimes a running process will prevent some of the values from being added to the registry.
